What is a cloud data platform?
A cloud data platform is the centralised layer that collects, transforms, stores and serves data across your organisation. In a Microsoft context this is typically Microsoft Fabric - covering data pipelines, a lakehouse or warehouse, OneLake storage and Power BI reporting - all governed and maintained as one coherent environment rather than a collection of disconnected tools.
Do we need a data warehouse or a lakehouse?
For most mid-market businesses, a Fabric lakehouse is the right starting point. It handles structured and semi-structured data, integrates directly with Power BI via Direct Lake, and scales without the licensing overhead of a dedicated warehouse. A Fabric Data Warehouse is the better choice when your primary workload is SQL-based analytics with complex joins and strict schema enforcement. We assess this in the Establish phase before committing to an architecture.
How long does a data platform build take?
A foundational Fabric lakehouse or warehouse build - pipelines, governance, semantic model and Power BI integration - typically takes ten to sixteen weeks. That is preceded by a four-week Establish phase that defines the architecture and scope precisely. Migrations from Synapse or legacy on-prem warehouses add time depending on the complexity of the existing estate.
Can you migrate our existing Azure Synapse to Fabric?
Yes. Synapse Workspaces and Pipelines map to Fabric workspaces and Fabric Data Factory. Synapse Dedicated SQL Pools map to Fabric Data Warehouse. Synapse Spark Pools map to Fabric Data Engineering. We approach migrations incrementally - components move one at a time aligned to natural business cycles, rather than as a single forklift project.
What data sources can you connect?
Any source that exposes data via API, database connection, file export or streaming. The most common in mid-market engagements are Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Salesforce, NetSuite, SQL Server, SharePoint, and operational databases. Azure Data Factory and Fabric Data Factory both support hundreds of connectors, and custom integrations are straightforward for sources that publish an API.
